Bob Rafkin slipped away from us today.

He’d been struggling with cancer for a few years.

SWEET DREAMS – Bob Rafkin

Previously, he asked Al Scortino if he could sit in with the duo during a benefit
performance for Jennifer Goldecker on Merritt Island. He was very humble in his
approach and gracious in accepting our decline. Perhaps we blew it, as he was
always exquisite in his tasteful accompaniment. This would have likely been NOT
only a powerful surprise to our arrangements but a delight for the audience.

I’D RATHER BE AN OUTLAW – Bob Rafkin

Bob told a supportive (OUTLAW genesis) story of a home owning resister in LA he
came to know. A guy with long family history in the family home, currently
occupied, objecting vigorously to another freeway being built on top of the
property.

COMFORT IS THE MUSIC – Bob Rafkin

Standing/talking in the food line with Shelby Lane and her mom, Kashi, during
the Barberville Pioneer Days, Shelby passionately described her dreams to be an
astronaut.

EIGHTY ACRES OF STARS – Annie Simms performed by Bob Rafkin as sung by his
daughter Shelby Lane

Sitting with Kashi&Bob at the South Florida Folk Roundup after his set we spoke
at length about his touring time with Phil Ochs. This conversation began with
laughs about my muffing his invitation to play accordion during one of his South
Florida Folk Festival performances. I arrived all excited to justify this honor.
When the awesome bass player and magnificent percussionist began, , , I realized
instantly the song I’d developed a part for wasn’t the song Bob intended for me
to accompany. How embarrassing. He never spoke another word about it.

During this conversation I referenced a direct quote from Phil Ochs (confession
as John Butler Train) as documented in “Inside LC: The Strange But Mostly True
Story Of Laurel Canyon And The Birth Of The Hippie Generation”. Clearly Bob was
familiar with Zappa’s “Log Cabin” gatherings/ operations from/adjacent to the
CIA’s Lookout Mountain facility.

Becoming more animated than I’d ever seen him, he told a first hand story.
On stage with Phil Ochs at Carnegie Hall when the
“Bolsheviks” created such a commotion, threatening them, the concert was
uproariously canceled. Bob kept repeating with adamant disdain, “Bolsheviks”,
prefacing every sentence.

Phil went on to record the album “Shoot Out At Carnegie Hall”. Somewhere in a
Phil Ochs documentary is footage of he & Bob on this stage just before the
“suits with dark glasses appeared and grabbed Phil taking him away to a waiting
black car”. Bob was never sure about Phil being all there or if he was a drug
addled mind controlled asset of the CIA. The notion of the double entendre
shines in LOVE ME I’M A LIBERAL.

There were the years where Bob lived in the Laurel Canyon. In a small shack with
NO locked door, before he dropped out of music for an extended period of time.
The Byrd’s recorded one of his tunes in a way he disliked extremely. “I took the
record and threw it away, , , like a frisby.” making the motion with his arm.
Here is Bob doing his rendition of the tune the Byrd’s mangled.

LAZY WATERS – Bob Rafkin

This performance at Leu Gardens was preceded with a current events post from me
to 4FoFFers , woven around Bob’s song SOMETHIN’ WRONG IS GOING ON. The man was
always so understated, often with a tinge of dry humor. In his acknowledgement
from the stage of this promotional post for his concert, calling attention to
it/me in the audience, with his kind smile and easy laugh.

My sense is Bob Rafkin’s gentle ways, like the examples above and so much more,
became manifestly focused somewhere along this life journey when he became a Buddists.
A wonderful human being to know. His presence shall be dearly missed, NOT forgotten.

Bob Rafkin – Singing/Songwriter

Boumel House Concert Series, March 23, 2013
written by Susan Moss
as posted on the South Florida Music List

He had me at dragonflies… and then he kept me with wine in a coffee cup… and prayers in a tree… and waltzing across Texas (oh my… – I so enjoyed the house concert last night in Coral Springs!

I had heard *of* Drew Nelson but not heard him before – when my friend Ralston Bowles played at Heart’s Desire last month, he highly recommended that I go see Drew, as they are fellow Michiganders. Oh, the delight of a new discovery – Drew exceeded my expectations… with his Lyle-Lovett-but-raspier voice, his precise guitar skills and his stellar songwriting: smart and evocative lyrics with unpredictable and sometimes imperfect (that’s a good thing, Martha!) rhymes (no bulldozer and foreclosure here…

Already looking forward to the next time our paths cross – in the meantime, I have his new CD, Tilt-A-Whirl, to keep me company…

…and am ordering his previous two from Waterbug Records…

Thanks also to Lani (pronounced Lay-nee) Nash for her enjoyable opening set – Arlene said Lani will be the Featured Artist at the next Broward Folk Club Open Mic at Your Big Picture Show on Friday, April 5…

Boundless kudos to Arlene and Rob Boumel for hosting last night’s show, as well as their continued presentation of a stellar house concert series – we are lucky to have so many choices of such diverse musical styles here in South Florida, and we are grateful to those who choose to support live original music so we can bring these talented artists to our part of the country…

P.S. One word for Dave Cambest’s lemon-ginger cheesecake: divine!

Mar 24 2013

An overflow crowd at the Shack last night experienced an evening of mirth, passion and inspiration. Music has been a major part of Ellen Bukstel’s journey for decades. As a pianist and singer she performed in her early years. Her 4 piece band “Legacy” became well known late in the last century. But it is about 10 years ago that she branched out as a singer songwriter.

Ellen has written about her family, life’s struggles and triumphs; and also has a keen eye for the political landscape.

Her first album, Daddy’s Little Girl was very well received. The new one should be out in late May.

Together with her two sons, Todd and Brett Segal, Ellen has taken on some important projects. Saturday night the audience

viewed a fundraising video created by Ellen and the boys. It is a gripping and very emotional brief documentary that’s only soundtrack is a wonderful song, written by Brett and Ellen. The crowd was visibly moved. Easter Seals, for whom the video was made, continues to raise millions with this film titled ” Small Miracles”, a masterpiece.

Ellen has often directed her talent to helping others and her web site www.ellenbukstel.comreveals some of the

outstanding projects she has created for the homeless, for the tragedy of violence against women, and the needs of those less fortunate in our Community. Take the time and view them. You will be inspired.

Last Saturday Ellen and her kid brother Gary put on one hellava show. Brett Segal, a great sound tech and recording studio engineer, percussionist and pianist, treated us all to 3 songs he sang.

Ellen Bukstel is a force that is making an impact and many others are benefiting. That’s a growing legacy we all can admire.

And can she sing !

Thanks Ellen and Brian for bringing the music to us all.
