Central Florida-Janis Ian at the Carrollwood Cultural Center![]()
8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Central Florida Central Florida-Janis Ian at the Carrollwood Cultural Center Janis Ian began her mostly stellar, sometimes stormy, professional life at the ripe old age of 12 when she wrote her first song and was published by Broadside Magazine. That led to her first “real” show, at New York’s venerable Village Gate, where she shared a stage with Tom Paxton, Lou Gossett Jr., Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, and a host of other singer-songwriters. At 14, she wrote “Society’s Child,” which is also the name of her self-penned autobiography (Tarcher/Penguin), now available as an audio book (Audible.com). It traces her Grammy Award winning career and the many cornerstones she laid for others to build on. The audio book is produced by Grammy Award winner Stefan Rudnicki, producer of over 1,000 audio books, who has also been honored with Grammy nominations, Audie Awards and AudioFile Earphones Awards. From her first headlining show at Greenwich Village’s Gaslight Café at age 15, her life was fraught with challenges. Most adults could not have survived the scorn and controversy that surrounded what was to Always one to follow her heart and her beliefs, Janis was one of the first celebrities to come out publicly. She and her partner of 23 years were married in Canada in 2003, the only place where gay marriage was legal at the time. Her roller coaster ride has taken her to Nashville, her home this past quarter-century, where she thrives with new product on her own Rude Girl Records label, ongoing touring, and perpetual and prolific songwriting.become her debut single and first hit. “Society’s Child” focused on an interracial couple in an era when tempers flared at even such a mention. The intimidating boos she received on-stage from racists shied in comparison to the hate mail and death threats she was subjected to. She has continued to hold her head high despite criticism, family problems, near fatal health issues, failed relationships with both men and women including an abusive and broken marriage, and devastating financial crises. ■In 1976 she received 5 Grammy nominations for the album Between the Lines and the single “At Seventeen” which has become a classic that is still revered today. She was one of only five solo female artists to receive that many nominations in one year. The others were Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin and Olivia Newton-John |

1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Come to our hootenannies and help us raise the roof the first and third Sunday of every month. We meet in a comfortable church community room near downtown St Petersburg, FL from 1:30 to 4:30 with a break halfway through. IF YOU KNOW THIS MUSIC, WANT TO SING IT LOUD AND PROUD AND/OR PLAY AN INSTRUMENT, WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU!!! SOJO is about singing all kinds of music ranging from well-known traditional songs, to old-time Americana, all the way around to songs by the big names in folk and folk/rock from the '50s up to the present. And what's a sing along without some Beatles, pop songs, rock songs, traditional British songs and Irish folk songs? We mix it up, but folk music is our anchor. We use the Rise Up Singing songbook as our main source for most of our songs, but participants may also bring lyrics and chords to songs not found in the book and hand out copies. We gather in a circle and each member selects a song for the group to sing and play. Each member also has the option of going solo, teaching a song, leading an alternate version of a song, or passing altogether. But if you know the song, we want you to participate! The first Sing Out Jam Out ("SOJO") started in March 2007 in Arlington, VA, followed in February 2011 by the Ft Lauderdale area SOJO. Now Tampa Bay gets to experience the magical camaraderie of getting together twice a month to sing and play folk, folk/rock and pop songs we all know and love (or are willing to learn!). WHILE THE EMPHASIS IS ON SINGING TOGETHER, your musical instrument is a welcome and valuable accompaniment to the chorus of voices. We warmly welcome harmonicas, mandolins, banjos, hammered and mountain dulcimers, fiddles, basses, autoharps, concertinas, and all acoustic stringed and wind instruments. Some instrumentalists sing along with us, some just play. All the rest make a joyful noise with just their voices. Since these are sing alongs based around the Rise Up Singing songbook, participants are strongly encouraged to have their own copies of the book. Check eBay, half.com, amazon.com, overstock.com, etc. for low-priced used copies. You can also buy new copies direct from http://www.singout.org/rus.html for $18 or $25 depending on print size. Rise Up Singing is not too easy to find at local bookstores. You may also borrow a copy (we have a one time only borrow policy as we don't have many to go around). See these links to get an even better idea of what we're about: The premier SOJO in VA: http://www.meetup.com/folkSOJO/ Songs you're very likely to hear: http://www.meetup.com/folkSOJO/files/ More about our format: http://www.meetup.com/tampabaysojo/about/ Pictures of past SOJOs: http://www.meetup.com/folkSOJO/photos/ The Ft Lauderdale area SOJO: http://www.meetup.com/FloridaFolkSOJO/ We're all about enjoying the camaraderie that comes with singing and playing music with enthusiastic like-minded people in a friendly, welcoming environment! With an eye toward accumulating a sizeable membership before we get off the ground, we're setting this meetup well in advance to allow it to gestate. We're a fun non-judgmental group for all skill levels! COME CHECK US OUT! Online South Florida-Michael Stock WLRN 2PM![]()

As per the time-honored cliche, when a door closes (the disappointment of Terri Hendrix's understandable cancellation), a window opens (voila, David Roth!) - we are in for such a treat this next concert, our last of the season. Where did the year go?!? - rhetorical question... :-) Saturday, May 11, 2013 David Roth 7:30 p.m. $20 door/$17 advance (plus non-perishable item for our local Cooperative Feeding Program) Labyrinth Cafe UU Church of Ft Lauderdale 3970 NW 21st Ave. Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309 I-95 to Oakland Park Blvd., West exit. Go to light at NW 21st Ave. and turn right. Just past the first light, church will be on the right. http://www.uucfl.org/finduu.htm (We received an e-mail from Terri Hendrix last month, cancelling her 5/11/13 Labyrinth Cafe show... and we of course completely understand that her health is a priority. In the meantime, we are grateful to David Roth for a synchronistic win-win fill-in. Terri requested that we share a portion of her e-mail, and we ask that you keep her in your thoughts, prayers and purple candle intentions: "I'm very disappointed to tell you that I'm not going to be able to honor my concert date with you. If you need to give an explanation for this…feel free to tell people the truth. I have Epilepsy and am staying off the road so as to get the seizures under control. There's a genuine lack of education about seizure disorders, and when things improve, I do hope to help folks learn about a condition that affects 200 thousand people a year.") Chicago native David Roth cemented his connection to the folk music community on the streets of Greenwich Village in the 1980's at the open mics at Folk City, the Speakeasy, Jack Hardy's weekly songwriting groups, and anywhere else he could find an open door and an open ear. Now in his 26th year of full-time music-making, David's songs have found their way to Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, several Chicken Soup for the Soul books, the Kennedy Center, the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul, & Mary concerts, NASA's Goddard Space Center (his song, "Rocket Science" went up on the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009), the "Rise Up Singing" Songbook, countless coffeehouses, conferences, concert halls, festivals, and 12 CDs on the Wind River and Stockfisch (Germany) labels. Featured on many of Christine Lavin's seminal Rounder Records compilations, the former artist-in-residence at New York's Omega Institute is also Coordinator for the Swannanoa Gathering's Contemporary Folk Week each summer in Asheville, NC. David is thrilled to join us from his home on Cape Cod where for the past 7 years he's hosted the Full Moon Open Mic, providing a forum for local musicians to connect and be heard while at the same time collecting donations for local non-profits. Get ready for a roller coaster ride of song and story. It is being co-hosted by several wonderful folks; Camille Grace, Barbara Moller, Kathy & Jim Teas and Susan Hangge at the Dice House. DIRECTIONS:
If you are traveling West on North Kendall Drive (S. W. 88th Street):
· Travel past Dadeland. Travel past Greenery Mall (get to left hand lane). · Turn left on S.W. 82nd Avenue (there is no traffic light) · Travel South about a mile (pass one traffic circle.) · Second traffic calming circle on corner of S. W. 100th Street and 82nd Avenue. Go partially around circle. Dice House is on your left (white house with a porch around the front.) Parking lot to the south of the house, next to the tennis courts. ------------------------------ If you are traveling East on North Kendall Drive (S. W. 88th Street): Song Swaps include a pot luck supper so please bring your contribution, enough for six to eight people. Also bring instruments you care to play. You can perform a song, or ask the group for a song or tell a story or recite a poem or do a dance or pass. Everyone is welcome!
Song Swap etiquette: If you are playing a song, you may tell the group whether you wish for others to join in or not. If you are singing or playing while another person is taking his/her turn, sing or play softer than the lead performer. We are getting to be a large group, which is wonderful! But with so many people attending we do need to be mindful of each other. Please keep your selection to 5 minutes or less, so everyone can have their turn. Also, please respect the circle and keep talk in the circle to a minimum. Congregate away from the circle for extended conversations, please & thank you! Hosts needed: Would you like to host a Song Swap? We need hosts for June & July, and October & November. Please contact Mary Larrick (mlarrick@gmail.com) to volunteer or if you have any questions. Don't let the lack of a huge room hold you back. We have often done circles within circles, in smaller rooms, that work out great! Hope to see you there! Dade-Acoustic Night @ John Martin's Pub 8PM |
