From Dr. Bob
This past week saw many changes in the folk and acoustic music
scene. Glenn Allen’s open mic at Ye Old Falcon Pub, one of my personal
favorites, has ended. Open mics are very personal ventures as those of us
who have started one know. I personally started two last year, both of
which were short lived. However, the love and time invested is never
wasted, and a lot of fun and enjoyment is gained no matter how long the
event lasts. I take my hat off to, and give a big traveling medicine show
salute to Glenn Allen for his continous efforts in creating open mic space
for all of us to enjoy.
In Miami, another era appears to be coming to an end as Jimmy Durkin
(www.reverbnation.com/jamesdurkin) releases the reigns as open mic host at
Luna Star Cafe. Jimmy has managed the Luna open mic for the past two
years. He joins a long and honorable list of Luna MC’s, including Brother
Lou (www.brotherlou.com), Tony Thomas, Glenn Allen and Carrie Lynn. So
who’s next? It will be written in the Luna Stars shortly. In the mean
time, look for Jimmy at some of his favorite performance spots in
Hollywood, Davie and Delray. And thank you Jimmy for all the good times.
Meanwhile, at Your Big Picture Cafe (YBPC, www.yourbigpicturecafe.com, 4900
S. Univ. Dr, Davie, 954-252-5644) Len and Lance Perry’s open mic was shaken
to the core this past Saturday by the Whiskey Hickon Boys
(www.whiskeyhickonboys.com). This duo out of Pennsylvania broke the bank
with their version of rock-and-roll folk played on a ukulele and long neck
acousctic guitar bass. What a night that was!
In addition to his YBPC gig, Len Perry also runs an acoustic open mic every
other Tuesday at Stage 84 (www.stage84fl.com, 9118 W State Road 84, Davie,
33324, 954-474-5040). This month it will happen on Mar 1st, 15th, and
29th. Featured guests like the Whiskey Hickon Boys are known to show up
there, too.
