CHANNING has spent the last six years on the road — from playing bass in a country fiddle band to studying Mozart on clarinet, she just recently found sanctuary in south Florida. Bringing a fusion of Caribbean and American folk to roots jazz –with a classically trained clarinet– this young woman’s foundation is in the old school. With the banjo she sings Appalachian mountain ballads, and plays Irish tunes on her flute. And to round off the edges, she designs meditation music, using her Native American flute as the source of sound. Spending most of her time in Florida and the Caribbean she is now in search of a creative genre.
A thirty something gal channeling Benny Goodman, owning the clarinet as though it was in her hands at birth, and drawing on an itinerant life that many of us only dream about to bring us music with flavors of Bach, Virgin Islands rhythms and patois, Swedish Klezmer, old English madrigals and boogie from the forties. And that is just what Channing Griggs brings to this gathering of four very talented ladies. Channing and Juliann, her identical twin sister, find harmonies that can only come from life long singing together. Two local musicians will be joining them. Shira Abergel, a performing artist of many disciplines: a musician of many instruments, singer-songwriter, actress, dancer, and all around performer, she has a BFA in Theatre Performance from New World School of the Arts. Sue Sirianni has been a music presence in South Florida for many years and adds a fine balance to this rare mix of talent and provenance.
Channing, daughter of a career Marine, first picked up a clarinet at age nine. She capped that beginning with a degree in Music Therapy from FSU and will complete her internship this year. In the meantime, she worked as a field hand, lived in the Virgin Islands and in many parts of the U.S. including much of Florida. Her YouTube postings and ReverbNation page give us a fine taste of her very diverse and accomplished music. There is a variety, freshness and creativity to her music that promises an evening of very diverse and enjoyable music. The group plays banjo, clarinet, flutes, upright bass, percussion, auto harp, and more. Each of these performers brings experience and maturity to their music. Once again, Val has brought us music we just cannot find in many other local venues. This evening will be a treat.
